Some Women Wear Skirts to Defy Satan's Gender Bending Scheme
One reason is the principle of biblical modesty, as defined in 1Timothy 2:9: “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;”
Long, flowing skirts and dresses are chosen as modest, feminine apparel by many who are endeavoring to follow biblical principles. But there is another reason that is even more compelling than modesty.
This has to do with an understanding that God’s desires women to be feminine, and men to be masculine in their appearance. In Deuteronomy 22:5 we read: “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.”
This verse describes a behavior condemned by the Lord that is termed in our day as crossdressing. Modern definitions for crossdressing include:
- To dress in the clothing characteristic of the opposite sex.
- Clothing oneself in the garments of the opposite sex.

Cross-dressing is the wearing of clothing and other accoutrement [accessory items of equipment or dress] commonly associated with a gender within a particular society that is seen as different than the one usually presented by the dresser. Nearly every human society throughout history has made distinctions between male and female gender by the style, color, or type of clothing they are expected to wear, and likewise most societies have had a set of norms, views, guidelines, or even laws defining what type of clothing is appropriate for each gender. Cross-dressing runs significantly counter to those norms and, therefore, can be seen as a type of transgender behavior. It does not, however, necessarily indicate transgender identity; a person who cross-dresses does not always identify as being of the opposite gender.
The term cross-dressing denotes an action or a behavior without attributing or proposing causes for that behavior. Some people automatically connect cross-dressing behavior to transgender identity or sexual, fetishist, and homosexual behavior, but the term cross-dressing itself does not imply any motives.
Crossdressing—wearing clothes typical of the opposite sex—is extremely displeasing to God. When God declares that something is an abomination, we need to pay attention! That’s very strong language. Therefore it is very important for us to understand exactly what it is that displeases God so strongly.
The issue at hand that begs an answer is: Is the wearing of pants by women today considered crossdressing by God? If we can determine for a certainty that it is not crossdressing, then we can safely wear our pants before the Lord. But if we find that it is indeed crossdressing, then we know that it is definitely displeasing to God. No Christian should be willing to continue any behavior that is abominable to God!
For some women, Deuteronomy 22:5 is sufficiently clear to convince them that God would have them dress in a distinctively feminine manner, refusing to wear clothing that is similar to men’s clothing, which includes pants.
But many are not so easily convinced. This verse does not use the word pants, and so, since society has fully accepted the wearing of pants by women, it is argued that women’s pants are in fact a women’s garment, and it is not crossdressing for women to wear them.
It is interesting that there are several Christian denominations that firmly hold to the belief that for a woman to wear pants is a violation of Deuteronomy 22:5. These would include the Amish, most Mennonites, United Pentecostals Church, German Baptist, and several other groups. But these are by far the minority among Christians.
Yet, God would not have us base our beliefs and practices on the opinions of others, be they many or few, but upon His Word. We each need to study the inspired counsel God has given us, and pray for wisdom and guidance as to our individual duty in carrying out His revealed will.
Seventh-day Adventist Christians have a unique perspective on this matter. Those who believe in the inspiration of the Spirit of Prophecy can find counsel regarding the specific Bible verse quoted above. We won’t be going into a lengthy discussion of this in this article, as several others deal with it in depth.
In summary, Ellen White links Deuteronomy 22:5 to describe a situation where women fashioned garments “resembling very nearly the dress worn by men.” The women she was referring to were not wearing men’s clothing. The style they designed was actually a knee length or shorter dress with pants underneath. She declared that “God's order has been reversed and His special directions disregarded” as given in Deuteronomy 22:5 by these women who were dressing “as close as possible” to men without actually wearing men’s clothing. “God's prohibitions are lightly regarded by all who advocate doing away with the distinction of dress between males and females.” What are God’s prohibitions? They are not to wear clothing pertaining to the opposite sex. These women were defying God’s expressed will by designing and wearing clothing that closely resembled men’s clothing. What was the distinction of dress between males and females that these women wanted to do away with? The distinction was that men wore pants and women wore dresses. That was the obvious difference that made it a plain distinction.
The following statement is extremely clear: "God designed that there should be a plain distinction between the dress of men and women, and has considered the matter of sufficient importance to give explicit directions in regard to it; for the same dress worn by both sexes would cause confusion and great increase of crime." {1T 460.1}
It clearly says that God designed that there should be a plain distinction between the clothing that men wear, and the clothing that women wear. A plain distinction does not mean to closely resemble. There a wide difference between those two phrases. One means different and one means similar. Pants compared with dresses are different; pants compared with pants are similar.
Again, the explicit directions that are being referred to are found in Deuteronomy 22:5. By wearing short dresses, and showing much of the pants, these women to whom Ellen White referred were abominable to God, because their attire resembled men’s attire. As we consider God’s inspired counsel through Ellen White, we can ascertain that:
- Deuteronomy 22:5 is applicable to us today, and God still finds crossdressing detestable.
- Women wearing clothing that resembles men’s clothing, even if it is not actually men’s clothing, is considered crossdressing according to God, which is abominable.
- The problem with the pants in the specified outfits is that they stood out predominately, since the dress was too short, resulting in a masculine appearance. On the other hand, a mid-calf or longer dress with pants underneath was pleasing to God. So we can see that if the panted leg was visible for more than a very few inches, this “resembled very nearly the dress worn by men.”

This counsel is so very pertinent and helpful to us today. Notice that she says that this practice of crossdressing would “cause confusion and great increase of crime.” We will see how this prophecy has indeed come to pass.
But they still may be some naysayers who contend that in Ellen White’s day, pants were not common on women, so yes, perhaps those first pants-wearing ladies were crossdressing, but today, when pants on women are common, then it’s not crossdressing for women to wear them. Thus they believe that pants on women today are totally acceptable attire and are in fact pleasing to God.
Just look at it this way: What we are saying if we believe that, is that if people practice an abomination long enough, so that over time it influences everyone in society to commit that same abomination, then it ceases to be an abomination! With that thinking, we could determine that just about every sin that society accepts should be all right by now, since people have been doing it for so long! That type of reasoning just will not fly.
As we consider the history of when women first started wearing pants, there should be no doubt that these “ground-breaking” women were committing abominable crossdressing. God declared it through His prophetess. It was sinful, it was wrong, it was wicked. It pleased the devil. In fact, it was all part of Satan’s master plan. He knows the power of crossdressing to corrupt. And there are those who have recognized this throughout history. Notice this interesting statement written in 1583 by Philip Stubbes:
Renaissance society determined gender partly through the distinction of clothing. Our apparel was given us as a sign distinctive to discern betwixt sex and sex, and therefore for one to wear the apparel of another sex, is to participate with the same, and to adulterate the verity of his own kind. Woman should wear skirts and men doublet [tunics] with hose, or society would become chaos and gender indiscernible.
When God’s prophetic time clock marked the beginning of the investigative judgment, it was then that Satan began to organize his demonic crossdressing campaign which rocked the world, starting humanity on a free-fall moral decline. Spiritualistic women seething with rebellion against God’s social order shook their fists in God’s face in angry defiance. These women had direct communication with evil spirits. They accepted the devil’s plan and became his agents to spread this corruption across our land. The crossdressing campaign that the devil launched at this time was a significant event in the context of the great controversy between Christ and Satan. As God gathers and prepares His church, Satan marshals his opposing forces. And just look around to see how great his army has grown!
It is true that out of ignorance there are godly woman wearing pants today. They have not yet understood the spiritual implications of this crossdressing movement that society has embraced. In times of ignorance, God winks at our sins. We are not responsible for following light until it shines on our pathway.
God gave us clear warning through Ellen White as to the danger, and it stands on record so that we can know without a shadow of a doubt that crossdressing, as specified in Deuteronomy 22:5, is truly an abomination to Him.
Abomination is a strong word, reserved only for the most corrupt, twisted, soul defiling sins. It’s serious business to commit an abomination against God. Why does God feel so strongly against this gender blurring? How is it such a blatant attack against His creatorship and authority over His creation?
We will see how it is the first step toward sexual perversion and destruction of the family unit. In these last days, Satan’s special attack has been against the family. How has he been so successful to cause such sexual perversion, such widespread immorality, such acceptance of homosexuality, such aggressive feminism, as well as such a strong interest in witchcraft and devil worship? Does crossdressing factor into this success?
